Total sales at all stores in August 2013 amounted to 183,767 million yen, 100.8% of the same period last year. Consolidated net sales of existing stores were 99.0% of the same period last year.  Average daily sales per store (all stores) amounted to 563 thousand yen. The average number of customer per store (existing stores) was 930, 98.1% of the same period last year. The average spending per customer (existing stores) was 576 yen, 101.0% of the same period last year.

 

Consolidated net sales of existing stores decreased year on year due to a large decline in cigarette sales, also affected by abnormal weather such as historic high temperature and regional heavy rains.  However, sales excluding cigarettes increased year on year.

Our profitability remains its steady growth, led by strong sales of high-margin fast food category and an enhanced merchandise assortment driven by Ponta card data analysis. 

 

Existing stores sales by merchandise category were as follows:

 

Sales of over-the-counter fast food category significantly exceeded the amount of previous year’s, thanks to favorable sales of in-store prepared foods, freshly-brewed coffee, MACHI café and Japanese Oden hot pot. 

 

Sales of sandwiches and other chilled bakery category significantly exceeded the amount of previous year’s, led by sales of new products such as bran sandwich developed for health-conscious customers.

 

The delicatessen category exceeded the previous year’s amount. In particular, prepared food categories recorded a significant year-on-year growth led by expansion of customer base by targeting female and senior customers. 

 

Sales of daily delivered foods, frozen foods and condiments exceeded the amount of previous year’s. Sales of these categories increased in line with expansion of customer base for female and senior customers. 

 

Sales of cigarettes were slightly worse than the year on year trend of the last month. It negatively impacted net sales of existing stores by 2% point year on year. 

 

As of August 31, 2013, the Lawson Group had 11,384 stores in Japan, including 109 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,205 LAWSON STORE100 stores. 

 

Existing store sales of Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. amounted to 94.8% of same period last year (number of customers: 93.7%; spending per customer: 101.1%). In August, Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. opened 2 stores and closed 1 store.

Lawson is promoting "The Autumn Rirrakuma Fair," from September 3, 2013 to November 18, 2013.
