Total sales at all stores in May 2012 amounted to 165,444 million yen, 108.8% of the same period last year. Consolidated net sales of existing stores were 102.7% of the same period last year. Average daily sales per store (all stores) amounted to 535 thousand yen. The average number of customer per store (existing stores) was 900, 100.8% of the same period last year. The average spending per customer (existing stores) was 569 yen, 101.9% of the same period last year.
The number of Ponta card members exceeded 40 million and the proportion of sales to the card members of total sales continued rising. By utilizing customer purchasing data of those Ponta card members for product development and by enhancing the offerings of perishable food, Lawson has steadily expanded its customer base by attracting more housewives and senior customers.
Gross profit of existing stores and gross profit margin at store level increased year on year.
Existing stores sales by merchandise category were as follows.
Sales in the rice and noodles, delicatessen, over-the-counter fast food, daily foods, and beverage categories sustained the growth trajectory of the previous month and exceeded 100% year on year. In particular, the over-the-counter fast food saw a significant sales increase from the previous year, owing to a continuous effort to enhance prepared food items and successful sales of the newly launched fried chicken and "Karaage-kun" with Hokkaido soy sauce flavor.
Sales of private brand "Lawson select," which includes prepared food, daily necessities and beverages, continued to be robust.
In perishable food category, enhancement of the fresh food-type LAWSON stores contributed to a substantial increase in sales.
Existing store sales of cigarettes declined year on year.
As of May 31, 2012, the Lawson Group had 10,732 stores in Japan, including 101 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,180 LAWSON STORE 100 stores.
Existing store sales of Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. amounted to 100.2% of same period last year (number of customers: 99.9%; sales per customer: 100.3%). In May, Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. opened 7 stores and closed 2 stores.
