The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in January amounted to 169,157 million yen, a 3.6% up year on year. Existing-store sales increased 0.8% year on year over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 503 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) fell 1.2% to 759, and the average customer spend at existing stores up 2.0% to 604 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 in January increased 0.8% year on year.
Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.
Thanks to special promotion, sandwich category performed well in January.
Sales of delicatessen items increased drastically year on year, mainly due to sales promotion of gratin related items.
Sales of bakery increased year on year, thanks to sales increases in new products.
Sales of daily delivered food and frozen food items, which include our Lawson Select series, rose considerably year on year, as a result of successful outcome from our initiatives such as to expand product offering in this category.
Sales of ice cream category rose strongly year on year in January, thanks to favorable sales of seasonal items.
Sales of soft drinks rose year on year in January, due to a promotion for Ponta members.
The fall in cigarette sales shaved a little off year-on-year existing-store sales growth in January.
The ticket sales including concerts, sporting events, etc., accounted for approximately 0.5 point increase year on year existing-store sales in January.
The Lawson Group operated 12,971 convenience stores in Japan at the end of January 2017, including 140 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 799 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
Regarding LAWSON STORE 100, existing-store sales were flat year on year in January (customer numbers:
-2.0%; customer spend: +2.1%). In January, we opened 1 store and closed 1 store.
Lawson is promoting the “Hello Kitty Winter Campaign” until March 6, 2017 to help broaden its customer base.
