The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in March amounted to 175,736 million yen, a 0.6% down year on year. Existing-store sales fell 1.3% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 524 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) rose 0.2% to 807, and the average customer spend at existing stores fell 1.5% to 602 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 fell 1.7% in March.
The sharp fall in concert ticket sales accounted for approximately 2.5 point of year-on-year fall in existing-store sales in this March, as it is compared to the quite strong result in March 2015 when we had some big music events. Furthermore, the fall in cigarette sales shaved around 0.5 point off its growth in March as well.

Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.

Sales of noodle category rose year on year, thanks to the good sales of cold noodle items due to the warm weather in March and pasta items which we renewed in February.

Sales from our delicatessen category, including salad items, rose strongly year on year in March, thanks to effective marketing of some category items.

Over-the-counter fast food sales also exceeded year on year in March due to continuing strong sales of donuts and MACHI Café and thanks to special sales promotion of ‘’Karaage-kun”.

Sales of daily delivered food items and frozen foods, which include our Lawson Select series, rose considerably year on year, with discount sales and TV advertisement.

Ice cream sales rose year on year due to the warm weather in March.

Good sales of NATURAL LAWSON brand’s cup beverages gave a considerable boost to year-on-year sales of chilled beverage category.

Sales of soft drinks exceeded year on year in March, due to the warm weather and thanks to special promotion including TV advertisement.

The Lawson Group operated 12,355 convenience stores in Japan at the end of March 2016, including 133 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 804 LAWSON STORE100 stores.

Regarding LAWSON STORE 100, existing-store sales rose 4.6% year on year in March (customer numbers: +3.0%; customer spend: +1.6%). In March, we opened no store and closed 5 stores.

Lawson is promoting the “Rilakkuma Spring Campaign” from March 4 to June 13, 2016 to help broaden its customer base.

Lawson plans to announce its earnings results for FY2015 on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Summary of financial results and supplementary information will be posted on this website.

Note 1: Lawson, Inc. sales include sales generated by LAWSON stores (excluding Lawson Okinawa, Inc., Lawson Minami-Kyusyu, Inc. and Lawson Kochi, Inc.), NATURAL LAWSON stores and LAWSON STORE100 stores. The LAWSON operation in Japan, equating to the non-consolidated performance disclosed up until January 2014, consists of sales generated by LAWSON, Inc. minus sales generated by LAWSON STORE100 stores.
