The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in September amounted to 173,131 million yen, a 4.2 up year on year. Existing-store sales rose 3.7% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 542 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) rose 0.2% to 850, and the average customer spend at existing stores rose 3.6% to 592 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 rose 3.8% in September.
Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.

Sales across our rice food category expanded year on year in September, thanks to strong sales of our lunch box items with Japanese raw materials and voluminous Teppen Mori series of rice balls made with popular koshihikari rice. “100 yen sales promotion” of rice ball during the so-called Silver Week, a period of three consecutive national holidays, also contributed to rice food category.

Both our delicatessen and daily delivered food categories performed extremely well in September, generating significant year on year gains. Salad sales contributed to delicatessen category, thanks to special product promotion, and strong sales of Lawson Select items helped boost the daily food category.

Over-the-counter fast food sales also expanded year on year in September, thanks to consistently strong sales of MACHI Café and donuts, and the successful promotion of our heated Japanese Oden hot pot items.

Sales of our dessert category rose year on year in September, thanks to special product promotion and running commercials on TV of “Custard Cream Puff”.

On the flip side, the continued sharp fall in cigarette sales shaved approximately one point off existing-store sales growth in September.

The Lawson Group operated 12,170 convenience stores in Japan at the end of September 2015, including 114 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 824 LAWSON STORE100 stores.

Regarding LAWSON STORE 100, existing-store sales rose 3.0% year on year in September (customer numbers: -0.3%; customer spend: +3.3%). In September, we opened no store and closed 10 stores.

Lawson is promoting the “Rilakkuma Autumn Campaign” from September 1 to November 30 to help broaden its customer base.


Note 1: Lawson, Inc. sales include sales generated by LAWSON stores (excluding Lawson Okinawa, Inc., Lawson Minami-Kyusyu, Inc. and Lawson Kochi, Inc.), NATURAL LAWSON stores and LAWSON STORE100 stores. The LAWSON operation in Japan, equating to the non-consolidated performance disclosed up until January 2014, consists of sales generated by LAWSON, Inc. minus sales generated by LAWSON STORE100 stores.
