The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in August amounted to 186,054 million yen, a 0.8% up year on year. Existing-store sales rose 0.4% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 564 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) rose 2.6% to 883, and the average customer spend at existing stores fell 2.2% to 592 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 rose 0.2% in August.
Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.
Sales across our rice food category expanded year on year in August, thanks to strong sales of our new voluminous Teppen Mori series of rice balls made with popular koshihikari rice. Strong sales of 100-yen rice balls also boosted rice food performance.
Both our delicatessen and daily delivered food categories performed extremely well in August, generating significant year-on-year gains. Continued strong salad sales contributed to delicatessen sales, and strong sales of Lawson Select items helped boost the daily food category.
Over-the-counter fast food sales also expanded year on year in August, thanks to consistently strong MACHI Café sales, a rising number of new donuts on offer, and the successful promotion of our heated Japanese Oden hot pot items.
Our soft drink and beverage category, which conducted a promotion for Ponta members, saw sales rise year on year in August. Sales were especially strong in the early part of the month when the weather was hot.
On the flipside, the continued sharp fall in cigarette sales shaved approximately 1.5 point off existing-store sales growth in August, while large differences in the year-on-year accounting of concert ticket sales also dampened existing-store sales growth by approximately 1.5 point.
The Lawson Group operated 12,195 convenience stores in Japan at the end of August 2015, including 114 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 835 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
Regarding LAWSON STORE 100, existing-store sales rose 2.8% year on year in August (customer numbers: +1.6%; customer spend: +1.3%). In August, we opened no store and closed 5 stores.
Lawson promoted the “Sanrio Characters’ Campaign” from June 16 to August 31, and is now promoting the “Rilakkuma Autumn Campaign” from September 1 to November 30 to help broaden its customer base.
Lawson plans to announce its earnings results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2015 on Wednesday, October 7. Summary of financial results and supplementary information will be posted on this website.
Note 1: Lawson, Inc. sales include sales generated by LAWSON stores (excluding Lawson Okinawa, Inc., Lawson Minami-Kyusyu, Inc. and Lawson Kochi, Inc.), NATURAL LAWSON stores and LAWSON STORE100 stores.
