The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in September amounted to 166,155 million yen, a 0.5% down year on year. Existing-store sales fell 1.5% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 517 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) fell 2.4% to 852, and the average customer spend at existing stores rose 0.9% to 567 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 fell 1.2% in September.

 

Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories. 

 

The weather in September was cooler than last year in many regions around the country. As a result, soft drink sales fell sharply year on year. Weak demand for cold noodles also knocked sales for the overall cooked noodle category considerably lower.

 

Sandwiches and other chilled bakery items generated another rise in year-on-year sales in August, as the segment continued to improve its already strong product range.

 

Delicatessen sales rose year on year in September, with prepared salad items proving particularly popular following the recent sharp rise in vegetable prices.

 

Sales of over-the-counter fast foods gained considerably over the previous year’s level. New flavors in the “Karaage-kun” fried chicken range helped boost sales there. Revised prices and the launch of the new S (Start)-size coffee option boosted MACHI café sales. 

 

The sharp fall in cigarette sales accounted for approximately 1 point of the year-on-year fall in existing-store sales in August.

 

The Lawson Group operated 11,984 stores in Japan at the end of September 2014, including 110 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,155 LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores.

 

Regarding LAWSON MART / LAWSON STORE100, existing-store sales fell 4.2% year on year in September (customer numbers: -5.0%; customer spend: +0.9%). In September, we opened 3 stores and closed 25 stores.

 

Lawson is promoting the ‘Rilakkuma Autumn Campaign’ from September 2 to December 1 to help broaden its customer base.

 

Note 1: Lawson, Inc. sales include sales generated by LAWSON stores (excluding Lawson Okinawa, Inc. and Lawson Minami-Kyusyu, Inc.), NATURAL LAWSON stores and LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores. The LAWSON operation in Japan, equating to the non-consolidated performance disclosed up until January 2014, consists of sales generated by LAWSON, Inc. minus sales generated by LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores.
