The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in July amounted to 184,703 million yen, a 0.7% fall year on year. Existing-store sales fell 2.6% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 555 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) fell 4.2% to 888, and the average customer spend at existing stores rose 1.6% to 588 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 fell 2.3% in July.

 

Existing-store sales contracted year on year in July, due to falling cigarette sales, and unfavorable weather such as typhoons and a prolonged rainy season. The sharp fall in concert ticket sales knocked existing-store sales down considerably in June. By contrast, more robust concert ticket sales in July helped boost overall existing-store sales by a healthy 0.5 points.

 

Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories. 

 

The sharp fall in cigarette sales accounted for approximately 1.5 points of the year-on-year fall in existing-store sales in July.

 

Sales for the over-the-counter fast food category contracted year on year, largely because the data was being compared to July 2013 when we conducted some vigorous product promotions.

 

Sandwiches and other chilled bakery items generated another rise in year-on-year sales in July, as the segment continued to improve its already strong product range.

 

Special product promotions in the evening and at night gave a considerable boost to year-on-year delicatessen sales.

 

The bakery category recorded rising sales in July, thanks to strong sales of new items such as the Croissant Bagel.

 

Sales in the ice-cream category rose sharply year on year, thanks to continued strong sales of our UCHI Café Frappe frozen drink series, featured in recent TV commercials.

 

The rice crackers and baked goods category recorded rising sales year on year, thanks to the continued strong popularity of NATURAL LAWSON’s series of original healthy sweets offering low sugar, calorie or salt content.

 

The Lawson Group operated 11,922 stores in Japan at the end of July 2014, including 109 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,181 LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores.

 

Regarding LAWSON MART / LAWSON STORE100, existing-store sales fell 5.5% year on year in July (customer numbers: -6.9%; customer spend: +1.5%). In July, we opened and closed no store.

 

Lawson is promoting the ‘Hello Kitty Campaign’ from June 17 to August 25 to help broaden its customer base.

 

Note 1: Lawson, Inc. sales include sales generated by LAWSON stores (excluding Lawson Okinawa, Inc. and Lawson Minami-Kyusyu, Inc.), NATURAL LAWSON stores and LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores. The LAWSON operation in Japan, equating to the non-consolidated performance disclosed up until January 2014, consists of sales generated by LAWSON, Inc. minus sales generated by LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores.
