The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in May 2014 amounted to 169,936 million yen, 101.1% of the same period last year. Net sales of existing stores were 99.4% of the same period last year. Average daily sales per store (all stores) amounted to 516 thousand yen. The average number of customers per store (existing stores) was 850, 98.6% of the same period last year. The average spending per customer (existing stores) was 569 yen, 100.8% of the same period last year. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan, which had been disclosed till last month as the non-consolidated net sales, were 100.0% of the same period last year.

 

Despite a reaction to the earlier surge in demand for cigarettes and other items before the April 1st consumption tax increase yet, sales in May improved year on year. This was mainly due to a contribution from developing merchandise which uses value-added raw materials, good weather throughout Japan and positive impacts from promotional measures.

 

Existing store sales by merchandise category were as follows:

 

Cigarette sales at existing stores contributed to lower existing store sales by about 2% year-on-year.

 

The over-the-counter fast food category showed a significant growth in sales. Main contributors include favorable sales of new flavored ’Kara-age Kun’ (chicken nuggets); enhanced in-store prepared food offerings (intended to expand the customer base); freshly-brewed coffee MACHI café.

 

Sales in the rice, sandwiches, and noodles category exceeded the amount of the previous year. The main factors are strong sales of rice balls, sandwiches and cold noodles.

 

Sales of the desert category exceeded those of the previous year, due to favorable sales of the ‘Pure Series’ desert with the good effect of TV commercials. ‘Pure Series’ is made of value-added domestic-source raw materials with no additives.

 

Sales of the bakery category exceeded those of the previous year, due to favorable sales of the ‘Pure Series’ bread and the impact of redesigned ‘Bran Series’ bread.

 

Driven by sales of ‘’Uchi café frappe (different flavors of sorbet),” the ice cream category continuously exceeded the sales amount of previous year.

 

As of May 31, 2014, the Lawson Group had 11,867 stores in Japan, including 105 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,197 LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores.

 

Regarding the business of LAWSON/LAWSON STORE100 in May, existing store sales amounted to 94.5% of the same period last year (number of customers: 94.3%; spending per customer: 100.2%). In May, we closed 3 stores.

 

Lawson plans to announce its earnings results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2015 on Friday, July 4, 2014. Summary of financial results and supplementary information will be posted on this website.
