Total sales at all stores in December 2012 amounted to 171,457 million yen, 104.2% of the same period last year. Consolidated net sales of existing stores were 98.9% of the same period last year.  Average daily sales per store (all stores) amounted to 536 thousand yen. The average number of customer per store (existing stores) was 848, 97.9% of the same period last year. The average spending per customer (existing stores) was 603 yen, 101.1% of the same period last year.

Existing store sales fell short of the amount of sales in December 2012, mainly due to the decline of the number of customers who purchased cigarettes, and waning consumer sentiment. In response to this sluggish market trend, the company has emphasized expansion of customer base by increasing housewives and senior customers and enhanced product development.

Existing stores sales by merchandise category were as follows.

Sales of the noodles category exceeded the previous year’s amount, driven by our original pasta series, Pasta-ya represented by the grilled Lasagna Bolognese.

Sales of over-the-counter fast food category exceeded the previous year’s amount thanks to favorable sales of Oden (Japanese hot pot), delicatessen items and freshly-brewed coffee which were sold under the brand name of “MACHI café” in over 2,200 stores.

The delicatessen category exceeded the previous year’s amount. In particular, those categories recorded a significant year-on-year growth, salad and seasonal food such as gratin and rice casserole.

The perishable food category continued to experience significant sales growth thanks to the continued efforts to enhance the fresh food-type LAWSON stores. Particularly since October 30, when the company announced to “make all of the LAWSON stores with perishable food,” perishable food items became supported by the customers, and the sales of perishable food category, along with the sales of other related items, continued to exhibit a robust increase.

Sales of cigarettes continued to decline below the amount of a year ago.

As of December 31, 2012, the Lawson Group had 11,122 stores in Japan, including 112 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,214 LAWSON STORE100 stores.

Existing store sales of Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. amounted to 97.9% of same period last year (number of customers: 95.1%; spending per customer: 102.9%). In December, Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. opened 9 stores and closed no store.

LASON and LAWSON STORE100 are running "the Miffy Dish Fair" from November 27, 2012 to February 25, 2013.
