Total sales at all stores in September 2012 amounted to 166,457 million yen, 104.2% of the same period last year. Consolidated net sales of existing stores were 98.5% of the same period last year. Average daily sales per store (all stores) amounted to 540 thousand yen. The average number of customer per store (existing stores) was 927, 98.7% of the same period last year. The average spending per customer (existing stores) was 561 yen, 99.9% of the same period last year.
Existing store sales fell short of the amount of sales in September 2011, partly due to the impact of weather in some regions such as North Japan where the abnormal hot temperature led to stagnant sales of hot foods, and Kyushu which suffered from the bad weather. Waning consumer sentiment may have also affected our business.
Existing stores sales by merchandise category were as follows.
Sales of the delicatessen, fast food, and daily foods categories each exceeded the previous year’s amount. In particular, the delicatessen category recorded a significant year-on-year growth, thanks to favorable sales of original prepared foods, namely the local delicatessen series which included fried dumplings, Sichuan-style mapo tofu, and Sichuan prawns with chili sauce.
Sales of private brand "Lawson select," which included prepared food, daily necessities and beverages, continued to be robust.
The perishable food category also continued to experience significant sales growth after we introduced more fresh food items such as packages of “freshly cut vegetables” in the regular LAWSON stores, in addition to the continued efforts to enhance the fresh food-type LAWSON stores.
Sales of cigarettes were again below the amount of a year ago but have continued a gradual year-on-year recovery.
As of September 30, 2012, the Lawson Group had 10,960 stores in Japan, including 107 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,197 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
Existing store sales of Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. amounted to 95.6% of same period last year (number of customers: 95.7%; sales per customer: 100.0%). In September, Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. opened 6 stores. There was no closure.
