In the wake of the cigarette tax hike effective October 1, 2010, sales of cigarettes declined by only 2% year on year, showing an earlier than expected recovery. Sales of non-tobacco products increased year on year.
Sales in the rice dishes category were higher than a year earlier, driven by onigiri rice balls, which recorded a year-on-year increase in sales. New onigiri products were aggressively introduced under the Onigiri-ya Renewal Campaign initiated on November 8, including the Niigata Koshihikari shio-nigiri, a salted rice ball made with Niigata-grown Koshihikari rice.
Sales in the over-the-counter fast food category grew significantly on a year-on-year basis. New product L-Chiki Hot fried chicken became a hit while Karaage-kun fried chicken also continued to experience strong sales.
Driven by the continuing robust sales of Baked bolognese pasta with hamburg, sales of cooked noodles including pasta far exceeded the figure recorded a year earlier.
The dessert category recorded far higher sales than a year earlier, continuing to show strong performance even after the first anniversary of its renewal, marked by the launch of the Uchi Cafe SWEETS line. The robust sales can be attributed to the new hit product Cream dorayaki pancakes and the continued strong sales of our original desserts including the Premium Roll Cake Series.
