In the wake of the cigarette tax hike effective October 1, 2010, sales of cigarettes declined by 17% year on year due to the impact of smokers' last-minute hoarding of cigarettes in September, resulting in a drop in sales for existing stores on a year-on-year basis. However, sales for existing stores excluding cigarettes sales exceeded 100% on a year-on-year basis.
In the rice dishes category, Grilled meat with rice supervised by Jojoen
our second Gohoubi-no-hitotoki (Enjoy luxury time) series of upscale boxed lunches (690 yen, tax included) showed robust sales, but overall sales in this category decreased from a year earlier as boxed lunch products exhibited a limited growth rate.
In the pasta category, which was renewed a year ago with the launch of the Pasta-ya line, sales of cooked noodles including pasta increased over the previous year, driven largely by sales of the big hit item of Baked bolognese pasta with hamburg (450 yen, tax included).
The dessert category, which was also renewed a year ago with the launch of the Uchi Cafe SWEETS line, continued to record higher sales than a year earlier. This was attributable to our original dessert category, including the Premium Roll Cake Series, and specifically the new big hit product, Premium tea roll cake (180 yen, tax included).
Sales in the over-the-counter fast food category grew on a year-on-year basis. The new product Mayonnaise-flavored fried chicken (210 yen, tax included) became a hit and Chinese steamed buns continued to experience a strong sales.
