Total sales for September 2010 were 158,363 million yen, up 11.5% year on year. Existing store sales on a consolidated basis increased 9.6% and average daily sales per store were 561 thousand yen. The average amount spent per customer was 589 yen, up 8.6% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 928, up 1.0% year on year.
Sales for existing LAWSON STORE 100 stores were up 0.8% year on year. (The average amount spent per customer was down 0.7% from the previous year and the average number of customers per store per day was up 1.5% year on year.)
Rush demand for cigarettes ahead of tobacco tax hike starting from the beginning of October boosted sales in cigarettes by 40% and above year on year*, which contributed to sharp increase in existing store sales on a consolidated basis with far beyond 100%. * Substantial daily sales of cigarettes for September 30, 2010 after closing store cash registers of the day achieved more than 60% increase in the whole month sales of cigarettes year on year.
Sales in the ice cream and soft drinks categories still rose year on year, aided by a heat wave of late summer during the early part of the month.
Sales remained up from the previous year in the cooked noodles category, as cold noodles sold well, and efforts to strengthen pasta brands met with continued success.
The dessert category continuously saw a significant increase in sales year on year, aided by strong sales of the original brand, Uchi Cafe SWEETS product including Premium Roll Cake Series.
Thanks to decrease in temperature during late September, sales in over-the-counter fast foods such as Oden (Japanese hot pot) and Chinese steamed buns rose up year on year.
As of September 30, 2010, there were 9,887 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 91 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 940 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 74 SHOP99 stores.
Ninety-nine Plus Inc. opened 7 new stores and closed 1 store, bringing the total number of stores operated by this company to 1,014 stores.
In October, LAWSON will continue to run a fall sales promotion, Rilakkuma Campaign until November 8.
