Total sales for April 2010 were 140,730 million yen, down 0.5% year on year. Existing store sales on a consolidated basis decreased 2.3% (and 2.1% on a non-consolidated basis) and average daily sales per store were 502,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 557 yen, up 0.1% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 881, down 2.5% year on year.
During April, a succession of colder days than last year throughout the month dampened demand for soft drinks, ice creams and certain other categories, leading to lower sales.
Total sales in the cooked noodles category were up year on year, despite the weather having a negative impact on sales of cold noodles. Category sales were elevated by continued strong sales of a revamped pasta lineup.
The bakery item category turned in a strong performance thanks in part to the Spring Rilakkuma Fair promotion.
The dessert category posted higher year-on-year sales. In addition to the Spring Rilakkuma Fair promotion, sales were boosted by the launch of new products, notably Platinum Cake Mont Blanc (210 yen (incl. tax)) and Premium Cheese Roll Cake (180 yen (incl. tax)).
On April 27, LAWSON launched a sales promotion in a tie-up with EVANGELION. Sales of original tie-up products, such as instant noodles and confectionery, were brisk. Details of this sales promotion can be found on this website (Japanese only).
Ticket sales for large events were strong.
As of April 30, 2010, there were 9,790 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 91 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 893 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 112 SHOP99 stores.
