Total sales for September 2009 were 142,054 million yen, down 95.7% year on year. Existing store sales on a consolidated basis decreased 6.4% (and 6.9% on a non-consolidated basis) and average daily sales per store were 504,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 540 yen, down 4.2% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 919, down 2.4% year on year.
During the so-called Silver Week, a period of three consecutive national holidays in September, LAWSON offered all rice balls of 150 yen or under at a special price of 100 yen and L Chiki fried chicken at 100 yen (normally 128 yen (incl. tax)), bringing in more customers year on year. However, due in part to a particularly strong performance in September 2008, sales fell year on year.
Year-on-year sales in the rice dishes category picked up from the previous month thanks to the Silver Week rice ball promotion and the introduction of products such as the Double pork Steak Meal (500 yen (incl. tax)), part of the Surprise Product Development Project.
Sales in the fast food category rose year on year as a result of a 70-yen oden (a Japanese hotpot dish)sale (for items normally 75 to 140 yen (incl. tax)) and strong sales of Negi-Shio Flavor Karaage-kun Japanese-style fried chicken (210 yen (incl. tax)).
On September 29, LAWSON unveiled the new Uchi Cafe Sweets brand of original desserts, with items such as Premium Whipped Cream Roll (150 yen (incl. tax)). Going forward, LAWSON will place even more emphasis on ingredient quality in product development.
As September 30, 2009, there were 9,631 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 92 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 744 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 193 SHOP99 stores.
In October, LAWSON is continuing to run the Fall Rilakkuma Fair campaign, as well as re-launching the Pasta Ya pasta brand. The Company is also accepting orders for year-end gifts, Christmas cakes, printed New Year's greeting cards and traditional New Year's dishes.
