Total sales for August 2009 were 154,840 million yen, down 3.4% year on year. Existing store sales on a consolidated basis decreased 5.5% (and down 6.0% on a non-consolidated basis) and average daily sales per store were 533,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 556 yen, down 3.5% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 942, down 2.1% year on year.
Existing store gross profit, a key performance indicator for LAWSON, remained strong relative to existing store sales.
Sales of soft drinks, ice cream and other categories that normally sell strongly in summer were lower year on year due to the impact of a typhoon that made landfall and cool temperatures during the Obon period. That said, sales were higher than the previous month.
Sales were robust in the bakery and dessert categories on the back of the successful Ponyo Ramen Bowl Present campaign.
As August 31, 2009, there were 9,629 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 92 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 702 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 228 SHOP99 stores.
In September, LAWSON will launch sales on September 15 (Tuesday) of Double Box Steak Meal (500 yen (incl. tax)), the second offering of the Surprise Product Development Project. On September 1 (Tuesday), LAWSON also began the Fall Rilakkuma Fair. Details of this campaign can be found on this website (Japanese only).
LAWSON plans to announce its interim results for the fiscal year ending February 28, 2010 on October 8, 2009.
