Total sales for July 2009 were 151,249 million yen, down 6.9% year on year. Existing store sales on a consolidated basis decreased 8.7% (and decreased 9.3% on a non-consolidated basis) and average daily sales per store were 523,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 551 yen, down 3.3% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 932, down 5.6% year on year.
Cigarette sales fell from July 2008, when the introduction of taspo cards (adult identification IC cards required to use cigarette vending machines) spurred bulk purchases of cigarettes.
In contrast to the hot weather last year, July 2009 was a rainy month with few sunny days, especially in western Japan. Reflecting this inclement weather, sales of cold noodles, soft drinks, ice creams and certain other categories were down year on year. On the other hand, instant noodle sales rose strongly.
As in June, sales in the rice dishes category were lower year on year. However, sales of Unagi Kabayaki Bowl (grilled eel basted with a sweet sauce on rice; 1,580 yen (incl. tax)), which is sold to coincide with the hottest part of summer when eel is traditionally eaten in Japan, and Stamina Grilled Beef Bento (450 yen (incl. tax)), a premium product launched on July 22, were popular with customers.
In the fast food category, Karaage-kun Japanese-style fried chicken (210 yen (incl. tax)) and L Chiki fried chicken (128 yen (incl. tax)) sold well, lifting overall category sales higher year on year.
As of July 31, 2009, there were 9,585 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 94 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 668 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 254 SHOP99 stores.
LAWSON plans to announce its interim results for the fiscal year ending February 28, 2010 on October 8, 2009.
