Total sales for June 2009 were 142,566 million yen, down 0.8% year on year. Existing store sales on a consolidated basis decreased 2.7% (and down 3.1% on a non-consolidated basis) and average daily sales per store were 510,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 539 yen, down 3.3% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 928, up 0.6% .
Cigarette sales fell from June 2008 due mainly to a year-on-year drop-off in bulk purchases of cigarettes in areas where taspo cards (adult identification IC cards required to use cigarette vending machines) have been required for more than a year now, which account for the majority of areas in Japan.
In the rice dishes category, sales were lower year on year, reflecting in part customers' preference for lower-priced items as they tightened their belts.
In Western Japan, fine weather spurred sales of soft drinks and ice cream above June 2008 levels.
As of June 30, 2009, there were 9,573 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 93 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 617 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 325 SHOP99 stores.
In July, LAWSON started taking orders for Unagi Kabayaki Bowl (grilled eel basted with a sweet sauce on rice). Sold to coincide with the hottest part of summer, this product is only offered in limited quantities. In July, LAWSON will also run exclusive campaigns for loyalty point cardholders, such as a tie-up campaign with the popular group EXILE.
LAWSON announced its business results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending February 28, 2010 on Thursday, July 2. The earnings release and supplementary materials can be found on this website
