Total sales for May 2009 were 146,065 million yen, up 2.7% year on year. Existing store sales increased 0.6% and average daily sales per store were 503,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 559 yen, down 1.5% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 888, up 2.2%.
Sales didn't grow as much as the previous fiscal year, when the taspo ID card was introduced in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu (except Okinawa). In the Kinki region, meanwhile, a new strain of influenza impacted sales somewhat for around one week during May.
As in April, temperatures oscillated wildly between warm and cold during the month. As a result, soft drink, ice cream and certain other product lines registered lower year-on-year sales, while cold noodles saw sales rise.
The dessert category continued to post strong sales growth on the back of new products.
In terms of campaigns, sales of original products, such as instant noodles and confectionery, developed in a tie-up with EVANGELION sold briskly. This campaign began May 26.
As of May 31, 2009, there were 9,562 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 93 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 561 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 376 SHOP99 stores.
LAWSON held its 34th Ordinary Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. A streamed video of the meeting is available on our web site (Japanese language only) along with details of the resolutions and results of voting.
