Total sales for April 2009 were 127,012 million yen, up 5.1% year on year. Existing store sales increased 3.1% and average daily sales per store were 502,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 571 yen, down 2.9% from the previous year, and the average number of customers per store per day was 867, up 6.1%.
April was marked by significant daily temperature variations. While sales of instant noodles and some other products were down from the previous year, sales of ice cream and certain other products increased.
Operating results were negatively affected by ticket sales for some large events falling outside April and sluggish demand for services.
In the fast food category, sales were strong for the 128-yen L Chiki fried chicken launched in late March and the new Karaage-kun Citron Pepper crispy Japanese-style fried chicken product, which sells for 210 yen. However, year-on-year sales were lower, reflecting a sales campaign held in the same month the previous year.
Sales in the dessert category remained strong from the previous month, boosted by both the Spring Rilakkuma Fair and the Weekend Fair.
As of April 30, 2009, there were 9,540 stores in the LAWSON Group, including 93 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 527 LAWSON STORE100 stores (of which 408 are run by Ninety-nine Plus Inc.) and 457 SHOP99 stores.
