Total sales for January 2010 were 131,832 million yen, down 4.4% year on year. Existing store sales on a consolidated basis decreased 6.3% (down 6.7% on a non-consolidated basis) and average daily sales per store were 454,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 559 yen, down 4.4%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 801, down 2.0%.
The rice dishes category saw an improvement in sales from the previous month, reflecting better rice ball sales, as well as strong showings by new products stemming from the Surprise Product Development Project. These new offerings included Beef Hamburger Steak Bento and Gyuuzukushi Bento, both of which sell for 498 yen (incl. tax).
Total sales in the cooked noodles category were up year on year on the back of a continued strong performance from pasta products like Grilled Chicken Bolognese Fettucine (450 yen (incl. tax)).
Sales were also higher year on year in the dessert category, where Uchi Café Sweets products led ongoing strong sales.
As of January 31, 2010, there were 9,738 stores in the LAWSON Group in Japan, including 93 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 845 LAWSON STORE100 stores and 127 SHOP99 stores.

On Tuesday, February 9, LAWSON issued a press release titled Discovery of Misconduct by Two Directors of LAWSON ENTERMEDIA and another press release concerning the cancellation of a share exchange that would have made Ninety-nine Plus Inc. a wholly owned LAWSON subsidiary.
LAWSON plans to announce its full-year consolidated operating results for the fiscal year ending February 28, 2010 on Wednesday, April 14.
