Total sales for December 2008 were 136,606 million yen, up 7.4% year on year. Existing store sales increased 6.0% and average daily sales per store were 525,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 610 yen, down 1.1%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 852, up 7.1%. Ticket sales declined year on year due to a low number of concerts at the end of the year.
Fast food category sales once again outperformed the previous year. Sales were particularly strong for the new Mild Curry Flavor of the Karaage-kun crispy Japanese-style fried chicken and other fried chicken offerings.
There were more warm winter days than in December 2007, which helped fuel strong sales of soft drinks and ice cream.
Sales in the confectionery category rose year on year thanks to the launch of the second series of products developed in conjunction with the popular anime The World of GOLDEN EGGS.
As of December 31, 2008, there were a total of 9,447 LAWSON Group stores nationwide, including 93 NATURAL LAWSON stores, 442 LAWSON STORE100 stores (of which 372are run by Ninety-nine Plus Inc.), and 471 SHOP99 stores.
The Minna de Attama LAWSON Campaign will continue in January. Stores are currently accepting orders for Marukaburi Sushi, a thick sushi roll traditionally eaten on Setsubun no Hi, a holiday in February that marks the official end of winter.
On January 8, LAWSON announced its business results for the third quarter of the current fiscal year. The earnings release and supplementary materials can be found on this website.
