Total sales for September 2008 were 134,251 million yen, up 10.0% year on year. Existing store sales increased 8.2% and average daily sales per store were 531,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 583 yen, up 2.0%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 903, up 6.0%.
Existing store sales remained strong from the previous month and rose year on year, despite the bar being set high in September 2007 by strong sales due to the beneficial effects of an Indian summer.
In the rice dishes category, in addition to continuing strong sales of rice balls, hand-rolled sushi sales were brisk, thanks to a sales promotion.
The counter fast food category turned in a solid performance, centered on fried foods.
During September, LAWSON ran a successful Fall Rilakkuma Fair campaign. All product categories-bread, bakery items and desserts-eligible for shopping points under this campaign performed strongly.
Confectionery and instant noodles also sold briskly, led by sales of products developed in conjunction with the popular anime The World of GOLDEN EGGS.
LAWSON will continue to run the Fall Rilakkuma Fair in October, as well as begin accepting orders for Christmas cakes, year-end gifts, printed New Year's greeting cards and traditional New Year's dishes.
As of September 30, 2008, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 92 NATURAL LAWSON and 274 LAWSON STORE100 stores (of which 204 are run by Ninety-nine Plus Inc.). Ninety-nine Plus had a total of 846 stores as of this date.
On October 3, LAWSON announced revisions to its interim and full-year forecasts. Please see the related press release for details. LAWSON plans to announce its interim operating results on October 14. The earnings release and supplementary materials can be found on this web site soon after release.
