Total sales for August 2008 were 145,796 million yen, up 7.1% year on year. Existing store sales increased 5.6% and average daily sales per store were 558,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 597 yen, up 1.6%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 928, up 3.9%.
Store sales remained steady through mid-August. Thereafter, however, a spell of cooler days at the end of the month led to sharply weaker sales of cooked noodles, ice cream, soft drinks and certain other product lines. As a result, there was a slight drop-off in sales from July, when high temperatures fueled strong sales.
In the rice dishes category, LAWSON conducted the Honoo no Chuka fair and launched new Niigata Koshihikari Rice Balls.
The fast food category continued to post strong sales, supported in part by the success of a promotion whereby the Karaage-kun serving was increased by one nugget. Also, on August 26, LAWSON began a nationwide oden (a Japanese hotpot dish) sales drive.
Confectionery product category sales were strong thanks in part to a plastic file-folder giveaway campaign relating to the movie Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.
At the start of September, LAWSON began accepting orders for Beaujolais Nouveau, and later in September we will run the Fall Rilakkuma Fair, as two initiatives to offer a merchandise assortment for the change of seasons.
As of August 31, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 92 NATURAL LAWSON and 70 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
LAWSON plans to announce its interim results for the fiscal year ending February 28, 2009, on October 14, 2008. The earnings release and supplementary materials will be posted on this web site as soon as they become available.
