Total sales for April 2008 were 120,801 million yen, up 2.7% year on year. Existing store sales increased 1.1% and average daily sales per store were 482,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 592 yen, up 0.6%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 807, up 0.4%.
The disparity between different areas in Japan has shrunken considerably due to an uptick in once-lackluster areas.
Sales in the rice dishes category registered a significant improvement, thanks to the success of product launches that dovetailed with customer needs. New products included a nutritionally balanced 550-yen boxed lunch with 30 different ingredients and an old favorite, a 498-yen boxed lunch featuring fried chicken.
The fast food category turned in sales almost on a par with the previous year, due in part to the addition of one nugget to Karaage-kun crispy Japanese-style fried chicken takeaways and the launch of a new Karaage-kun flavor, Yuzu Ponzu Sauce (Ichimi-Iri) (210 yen).
Sales in the prepared breads, dessert and bakery item categories continued to perform extremely well, boosted by the successful Spring Rilakkuma Fair campaign.
May will see the continuation of initiatives to strengthen mainly the ready-made meal category.
