Total sales for August 2007 were 136,131 million yen, up 2.6% year on year. Existing store sales decreased 0.6% and average daily sales per store were 521,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 589 yen, up 0.6%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 881, down 1.3%.
By area, sales remained strong in major metropolitan areas, particularly the Kanto region, but continued to struggle in Tohoku, Chugoku, Shikoku and other regions.
Sales of chilled drinks and ice cream were strong, boosted by a heat wave across the country during the month.
In the rice dishes category, rice ball sales were strong on the back of new product launches, such as hand-rolled rice balls containing spicy sausage (135 yen) and Korean pork kimchi rice balls (135 yen). Notwithstanding, category sales decreased as a whole year on year due to another sluggish performance from boxed lunches.
Thanks to a Miffy-themed picture plate campaign, sales in the delicatessen and dessert categories were good.
In September, LAWSON will continue aiming to increase the number of customers by expanding the customer base. Initiatives will include expanding sales of oden (a Japanese hotpot dish) and Chinese steamed buns, and accepting orders for Beaujolais Nouveau. LAWSON will also run a campaign offering the chance to win special prizes on One Piece (a popular Japanese anime) promotional products.
As of August 31, 2007, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 103 NATURAL LAWSON and 69 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
LAWSON plans to announce its interim results for the fiscal year ending February 29, 2008, on October 10, 2007. The earnings release and supplementary materials will be posted on this web site as soon as they become available.
