Total sales for April 2007 were 117,601 million yen, up 2.8% year on year. Existing store sales edged down 0.3% and average daily sales per store were 470,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 589 yen, up 1.5%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 795, down 1.7%.
By area, existing store sales were strong in major metropolitan areas, but struggled in regional cities.
In the rice dishes category, in addition to augmenting established brands with products such as Gohantei Juicy Hamburg (530 yen) and Onigiriya Niigata Koshihikari Sockeye Salmon Rice Ball (168 yen), LAWSON launched a number of products for health-conscious customers as it worked to expand the customer base. The latter included Magowa Yasashii Bento (580 yen), and Black Bean and Kelp Rice Ball (120 yen) made with black rice. However, these efforts failed to bring about a major change in sales trends.
Sales of prepared breads, for which a tasting campaign was run following the redesign of packaging in April, were strong. The new packaging coincided with active steps by LAWSON to launch new products, including the re-launch of Triple Katsu Sandwich (320 yen).
The fast food category performed strongly, thanks to the launch of Karaage-kun Black (210 yen) Japanese-style fried chicken as well as the start of a new promotion on April 24 where customers purchasing Karaage-kun products received an extra chicken nugget at no extra charge. This promotion ran through May 7.
As in March, dessert category sales were strong in April.
As of April 30, 2007, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 102 NATURAL LAWSON and 70 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
LAWSON announced its full-year results for the fiscal year ended February 28, 2007 on Wednesday, April 11, 2007. The flash report and supplementary information can be found on this website.
Last month we reported that the average number of customers per store per day was 794 and that the average amount spent per customer was 586 yen in March 2007. The correct figures were actually 782 and 590 yen, respectively. There was no mistake with the year-on-year comparisons.
