Total sales for February 2008 were 110,243 million yen, up 5.2% year on year. Existing store sales decreased 0.6% and average daily sales per store were 454,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 590 yen, up 1.2%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 764, down 1.8%.
With the exception of some areas, existing store sales weren't much different year on year in most areas.
In the rice dishes category, although boxed lunch sales continued to improve from the previous month, sales didn't increase year on year.
Despite slow sales of oden (a Japanese hotpot dish), sales in the fast food category were up overall year on year as a result of strong sales of Chinese steamed buns, and Karaage-kun Kaizoku BBQ (210yen), crispy Japanese-style fried chicken, and other fried foods.
Since February 1, we have been running the One Piece Otakara Present campaign featuring limited-edition original goods. Confectionery products, where we launched a large number of products, were up year on year, underscoring the popularity of the campaign.
Sales of cup noodles in both monetary and volume terms increased year on year due to new product launches and more cold days than last year. This despite price increases necessitated by soaring raw material costs.
LAWSON launched the Spring Rilakkuma Fair on March 4. Among other things, we are selling LAWSON limited-edition Rilakkuma products, running a special point campaign aimed at card members, and offering point stickers on products which can be exchanged for cups and other prizes. The Spring Rilakkuma Fair will run through May 6.
On February 25, we cancelled 5,000,000 shares of treasury stock (approximately 4.78% of the total number of shares issued before cancellation).
As of February 29, 2008, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 91 NATURAL LAWSON and 72 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
LAWSON will announce its results for the fiscal year ended February 29, 2008, on Thursday, April 10. The earnings release and supplementary materials will be posted on this web site soon thereafter.
