Total sales for August 2006 increased 2.9% year on year, to 132,625 million yen. Existing store sales declined 0.4% and average daily sales per store were 513,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 586 yen, down 0.4%, and the average number of customers per store per day remained the same at 884.
The discontinuation of Highway Card sales had the effect of bringing down existing store sales by more than 1%. In real terms, after excluding this effect, existing store sales since June 2005 have been level with or exceeded the same month in the previous year.
There was a year-on-year increase in existing store markups, an important performance indicator for LAWSON, and the percentage increase was greater than that for existing store sales.
Sales recovered in most areas, but struggled in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions.
Sales in the ready-to-eat meals category, including the rice dishes category, increased substantially, mainly due to a recovery stemming from good weather and a campaign started in July where customers who collect enough points during the campaign period receive a free Miffy picture plate.
In the beverages category, including soft drinks, sales rose due to good weather, mainly in western Japan.
LAWSON aims to increase customer numbers by expanding the customer base through efforts to create attractive autumn and winter sales areas, focusing on expanding sales of oden (a Japanese hotpot dish) and Chinese steamed buns in September.
As of August 31, 2006, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 67 NATURAL LAWSON and 61 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
LAWSON plans to announce its interim results for the fiscal year ending February 28, 2007, on October 11, 2006. The earnings release and supplementary materials will be posted on this web site.
