Total sales for June 2006 rose 2.3% year on year, to 121,767 million yen. Existing store sales declined 1.3% and average daily sales per store were 495,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 581 yen, up 1.3%, and the average number of customers per store per day decreased 2.5% to 850.
In this month, there was a decline in existing store markups, an important performance indicator for LAWSON. In June 2005, when markups far exceeded the June 2004 level. By way of reference, LAWSON conducted a 30th anniversary campaign in June 2005.
Customer numbers in June were up on May following the launch of the LAWSON Fair promotion.
The discontinuation of Highway Card sales had the effect of bringing down existing store sales by more than 1%.
Existing store sales in June, however, were boosted by approximately 2.9% year on year due to a rush of demand ahead of a July 1 increase in the tax on cigarettes. Since LAWSON closes its books at 13:30 each day, sales booked after 13:30 on June 30, the final day before the tax hike took effect, will be recorded in July.
By area, sales remained strong in Kanto, Chubu and other urban areas, but were sluggish in Chugoku and Shikoku.
Sales of soft drinks and ice cream suffered in the latter weeks of June due to a large number of wet days.
In the rice dishes category, there was no major change in the sales trend, despite the launch of such products as Spicy Sauce Steak Bowl (580 yen), a product available only during the LAWSON Fair campaign period, and Kuromame Rice Balls (150 yen), developed with NATURAL LAWSON, Inc. LAWSON started taking orders on Tuesday, June 20, for Unagi Kabayaki Bowl (grilled eel basted with a sweet sauce on rice) (1,580 yen). Sold to coincide with the hottest part of summer, this product is only offered in limited quantities.
Fast food category sales remained strong, posting double-digit growth on the back of new product launches and promotions.
In July, LAWSON will continue implementing major sales campaigns and other promotions to generate maximum sales during the traditionally busy summer months.
As of June 30, 2006, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 60 NATURAL LAWSON and 45 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
As announced in a press release on July 1, LAWSON has initiated trials of a LAWSON store format designed with seniors in mind in areas with a growing number of elderly people; products and store layouts reflect this stance. This is another action in LAWSON's ongoing drive to create stores matched to local customers' needs. LAWSON has already created NATURAL LAWSON and LAWSON STORE100 new-format stores.
On Tuesday, July 4, LAWSON announced its first-quarter results for the year ending February 28, 2007. Please check our web site for the Flash report and supplementary information.
