Total sales for December 2005 edged down 0.4% year-on-year, to 121,007 million yen, while existing store sales declined 4.6%. Average daily sales per store were 478,000 yen, and the average amount spent per customer was 611 yen, down 1.7%. The average number of customers per store per day slipped 2.9%, to 781.
Although the year-on-year change in existing store markups-an important indicator for LAWSON-decreased, the percentage decline was less than that of existing store sales.
The discontinuation of Highway Card sales accounted for a decrease of over 1.0% in monthly sales.
Record-breaking winter weather in many parts of Japan is seen as a key factor behind the decline in customer numbers.
By area, stores in the Kanto region continued to report brisk sales, while stores in Hokkaido and Shikoku struggled.
In the rice dishes category, sales weakened despite the launch of new Gohantei boxed lunches and Onigiriya rice balls, as offerings failed fully to capture the interest of customers. Going forward, we will step up efforts to develop products, design store sales areas and determine product lineups that respond to customer needs.
Fast food category sales remained strong, registering double-digit gains. This reflected the introduction of new products and in-store sales campaigns, as well as the impact of falling temperatures.
In the beverages category, record-cold temperatures led to a decline in sales of soft and chilled drinks.
As of December 31, 2005, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 35 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 16 STORE100 stores. Data for December represents the results of 8,273 stores excluding STORE100 stores.
LAWSON announced its third quarter financial results for the year ending February 28, 2006, on January 6 (Friday). The flash report and supplementary materials have been posted on this web site.
