Total sales increased 5.9% year-on-year, to 119,009 million yen. Existing store sales edged up 0.6%. Average daily sales per store were 494,000 yen, while the average amount spent per customer was 573 yen, a decrease of 1.1%. The average number of customers per store per day rose 1.7%, to 860.
Existing store markups exceeded the June 2004 level.
Sales were strong in all but a few areas, supported by a 30th anniversary commemorative campaign and favorable weather, particularly in western Japan.
Sales in the rice dishes category edged down from the June 2004 level. Stores continued to feature a wide range of products offering superb value, including a commemorative 30th-anniversary boxed lunch (500 yen), products in the Gohantei series of boxed lunches, notably grilled chicken and spicy curry with five-grain rice (500 yen), and onigiri (rice balls) made with Niigata Koshihikari rice, including one filled with Korean-style thinly sliced beef rib (180 yen). New products are also offered in July, including a boxed lunch featuring kabayaki (grilled eel basted with a sweet sauce on rice) (580 yen), which is a seasonal favorite, and the Double Curry lunchbox, created by a committee established within LAWSON to develop better-tasting and more appealing curries.
Sales in the fast food category remained brisk, owing to the release of Big Nankotsu Tsukune (minced chicken and chicken cartilage kebabs) (120 yen), a 30th-anniversary commemorative offering, and the launch of such new products as Cheese in Potato (120 yen), as well as intensive promotional efforts, including product displays highlighting the filling and satisfying size of these products, at stores nationwide.
In the beverage category, sales were hampered by the absence of a major hit like Healthya, a bottled tea beverage that boosted results in 2004.
As of the end of June, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 28 NATURAL LAWSON stores and seven STORE100 stores. Data for June represents the results of 8,132 stores. Data for STORE100-format stores is not included.
On Tuesday, July 5, LAWSON announced its first-quarter results for the year ending February 28, 2006. Click here for the Flash report and supplementary information.
