Total sales rose 3.4% year-on-year, to 117,141 million yen. Existing store sales were down 1.7%. Average daily sales per store were 473,000 yen, while the average amount spent per customer was 582 yen, a decrease of 1.5%. The average number of customers per store per day fell 0.2%, to 809.
Existing store markups were level with the previous year, supported by brisk sales in the fast food category.
By area, the Kanto region showed particularly favorable results, while stores elsewhere struggled as unusually low temperatures persisted.
Sales in the rice dishes category remained on an upward trend, with sales for the month double the May 2004 level. Sales of two new additions to the Gohantei series of boxed lunches-prawns with chili sauce with egg fried rice, and Japanese-style hamburger with green shiso rice (both 500 yen)-and gyudon (beef on rice in a bowl) (450 yen) were particularly strong. Other products contributing to higher sales included two onigiri (rice balls) made with Niigata Koshihikari rice: Dashimaki Tamago (onigiri with rolled omelette filling) (165 yen) and Menchi Katsu (onigiri with breaded and deep-fried minced meat filling) (180 yen).
Sales in the fast food category remained brisk, owing to the release of new products and expanded sales efforts on the part of stores. Cool temperatures hampered sales of soft drinks, ice cream and cold noodles.
