Total sales rose 4.3% year on year to 121,509 million yen, while existing store sales declined 0.2%. Average daily sales per store were 499,000 yen, and the average amount spent per customer was 622 yen, down 0.3% year on year. The average number of customers per store per day was 795, up 0.1% year on year.
Sales of soft drinks and ice cream were strong due to clearer, milder weather throughout Japan during December. Sales were notably robust in the Tohoku, Kanto, Chugoku and Shikoku regions, but weaker in the Chubu and Kinki regions.
The product lineup in the important counter-top food category was reinforced with new product launches and promotions, resulting in a significant increase in like-for-like sales compared to a year earlier. A much improved markup ratio for all products in this category also contributed to a year-on-year increase in markups at existing stores.
In boxed lunches, the Gohantei brand launched on November 30 proved popular with customers. Even compared to the previous month, sales of boxed lunches improved considerably, marking a major change in boxed-lunch sales. Buoyed by this strong support for Gohantei, LAWSON will now move out of the initial phase of this brand's development and begin offering even better tasting and more adventurous products. Sales of rice ball products in December maintained their recent strength, with sales at existing stores up on the same period a year earlier. Sales of rice balls with a new type of packaging, launched initially in the Tokyo metropolitan area on December 21, have also been healthy. We plan to steadily roll out this product across Japan.
Sales of seasonal products such as year-end gifts, Christmas cakes, printed New Year's greeting cards and Osechi, a traditional Japanese New Year's dish, were all higher than the previous year.
We plan to further establish the Gohantei brand with additional product launches in January.
LAWSON announced its third-quarter operating results for the year ending February 28, 2005 on January 7 (Friday). The earnings release and supplementary materials have been posted on this website.
