l Total sales rose 2.1% year on year to 112,411 million, while existing store sales declined 2.1%. Average daily sales per store were 486,000, and the average amount spent per customer decreased 2.6% to 581. The average number of customers per store per day was 833, up 0.6% year on year. In June last year, customers rushing to buy tobacco products ahead of a tax increase boosted sales at existing stores. The effect of the giveback on existing store sales in June this year was approximately 2.6%. Excluding this effect, existing store sales rose year on year, continuing the upward trend.
In the rice dish category, Lawson stores resumed nationwide sales of 470 beef bowls on June 15. Sales exceeded targets. Furthermore, existing store sales of rice balls recovered to almost the same level as the previous year.
The fast food category recorded double-digit sales growth, thanks in part to the launch of new products. These included 160 Spicy Pork Kebabs and 160 Fried Gyoza on June 15.
Sales of cold noodles, soft drinks-particularly new products-ice cream and other products that traditionally do well in summer were strong. Above-average temperatures across the country also helped to drive sales higher. Healthya, a bottled tea beverage launched in the Kanto region and parts of Chubu in June 2003, continues to sell strongly one year on.
DVD sales were brisk, supported by robust sales of hit titles such as Bayside Shakedown2 and Nimo.
Lawson stores are currently selling traditional summer gifts, with an emphasis on safe and healthy products customers can trust. Don't miss the chance to order these products. Orders close on August 16.
On July 6, LAWSON announced its first-quarter results for the year ending February 28, 2005. Click here for the flash report and supplementary information.
