Total sales increased 1.5% year on year to 112,467 million. Excluding sales of Highway Card toll cards, existing store sales decreased 0.1% (the impact of these cards was 1.3%). Average daily sales per store were 476,000, while the average number of customers per store per day was 814, down 0.3% year on year. Average amount spent per customer was 591, an increase of 0.2% year on year.
The average number of customers per store and existing store sales held firm in October, supported by healthy demand in the bakery and fast food categories.
In rice dishes, rice balls recorded double-digit sales growth. In November, Lawson plans to successively roll out new products to coincide with the first anniversary of the launch of the popular Onigiriya rice ball line.
Bakery items maintained strong momentum, posting their fourth consecutive month of sales growth. In addition to Lawson's original breads, Totte Oki Sengen, a product developed with Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd. that debuted on September 30, 2003, continued to sell well.
Continuing on from the previous month, sales of fast foods remained brisk, paced by the Ginjyou Chinese Dumpling Series, which was launched during the current fiscal year. Sales were also boosted by the success of the HOTHOT coupon campaign. Launched on October 21, this campaign applied to Chinese dumplings, oden (a kind of Japanese hotchpotch or stew) and hot drinks.
October 28 saw the re-launch of the Salad series. Off to a healthy start, these salads offer customers better quality, and as part of the re-launch, Lawson has also started selling salad dressings separately.
In the entertainment category, a Lawson forte, sales through Loppi multimedia terminals of commemorative stamps celebrating the victories of the Hanshin Tigers and Daiei Hawks professional baseball teams and 2004 calendars were strong, as were in-store sales of DVDs.
Lawson started accepting orders for New Year's greeting cards, year-end gifts, traditional food eaten at New Year in Japan, Christmas cakes and other seasonal year-end items. We hope LAWSON PASS cardholders will take advantage of discounts offered to them on these products.
In November, in addition to efforts to expand sales of New Year's items, Lawson is launching a range of enticing products sold in special display cabinets as it continues to focus on this strategic category. Early signs are encouraging, with sales making a smooth start.
On Tuesday, October 14, Lawson announced its interim financial results. The earnings release and other information can be found on this website.
