Monthly Operational Summary FY2003 (July 2003)

Business Report

more

Total sales decreased 4.0% year on year to 116,409 million. Excluding sales of Highway Card toll cards, existing store sales fell 4.9%. (Impact of these cards are 1.2%.) Average daily sales per store were 497,000, while the average number of customers per store per day was 827, down 5.6%. Amount spent per customer was 605 on average, an increase of 0.7% year on year.

A drop-off in tobacco sales was noticeable from July 1, following a rush to buy before a tax hike took effect. The tax increase only had a marginal negative impact of approximately 1% in July, because sales after 13:30 on June 30, when customers rushed to buy on the eve of the hike, were booked in July.

As already reported in newspapers and other media, sales of products that traditionally sell well in the summer months in Japan, such as soft drinks, ice cream and cold noodles, slumped due to record low temperatures across the country in July. However, sales of instant noodles and other products rose, highlighting the effects of the unseasonable weather conditions.

There were signs of a recovery in sales of main dishes in July. Unagi Kabayakiju, a traditional summer dish that went on sale for 720 on July 8, and Area Ichioshi Bento-Boxes, were among the notable performers.

Fast food products sold well during the month, with sales rising as a whole in this category. Growth was supported by established products, as well as the launch of two types of sherbet desserts priced at 180.

Bakery items also did well, especially Lawson's original breads

Although entertainment category sales were lower than the previous year, when demand was strong for videos and DVDs of the movie Spirited Away, ticket sales were healthy thanks to a large number of outdoor events.

In August, Lawson plans to continue expanding sales of staple products, such as 170 Hotate Shoyuyaki rice balls made with Niigata Koshihikari rice, which went on sale on Tuesday, July 29. Also expected to boost sales is a Lawson summer goods promotion tied to Studio Ghibli that runs from August 5 to August 18, the second in a series of events to celebrate summer.
