Total sales decreased 1.8% year on year to 106,538 million. Existing store sales fell 1.0%, taking into account sales of Highway Card expressway toll cards, which were discontinued. Average daily sales per store were 473,000, while the average number of customers per store per day was 789, down 1.2%. Yen spent per customer was 596 on average, dipping 1.4%. Although existing store sales actually fell 2.6% if Highway Card sales are ignored, Lawson's regional headquarters system, in operation since March 2003, enabled more detailed control and analysis of revenues.
The cherry-blossom viewing season in April should have provided sales opportunities, but sales slumped because temperatures in the first half of the month were markedly lower than last year and weekends were wet. Decreased sales were particularly evident in main dishes, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
The scheduled tax hike on happo-shu alcoholic beverages from May did not trigger a surge in sales in April, but sales of soft drinks began to recover at the end of the month with the weather.
In fast food products, Lawson re-launched Karaage Kun on April 15. Accompanying this move, Lawson launched an in-house project to review food ingredients, flavorings and packaging. As a result, existing store sales of fast foods jumped 8.4% over the previous year. Lawson will continue its sales promotion of Karaage Kun and other fast foods throughout May.
Lawson continues to provide products that are safe and trustworthy. Lawson not only develops original products by selecting the best ingredients and applying Lawson's high quality-control standards, the company is also working to systematically reduce and control food additive usage. As the first step, in Tokyo and the Kinki region Lawson has started eliminating preservatives in bento-boxes, rice balls, sushi, prepared bread, delicatessen items, salads and processed noodles. Lawson will apply this policy to the Chubu region in July, and then throughout Japan as the necessary systems are put in place.
