Total sales increased 1.3% year on year to 105,774 million. Excluding sales of Highway Card toll cards, existing store sales decreased 0.6% (the impact of these cards was 1.5%). Average daily sales per store were 445,000, while the average amount spent per customer was 620, a decrease of 0.6%. The average number of customers per store per day was 727, the same as a year ago.
While sales dropped during the three-day New Year's period, they recovered in the second half of the month.
January saw the launch of new products to augment Lawson's popular Onigiriya brand, which is now in its second year. On January 20, Lawson rolled out Niigata Koshihikari Hand-rolled Rice Balls. This was followed by January 27 launch of Niigata Koshihikari Boxed Lunches featuring top-quality rice and other ingredients. Sales of rice balls have rebounded to year-ago levels since the week in which Niigata Koshihikari Hand-rolled Rice Balls went on sale. However, in boxed lunches, sales of beef bowls and other products declined, with the exception of Makunouchi lunches, resulting in a marginal year-on-year improvement in the rice dish category as a whole. Nevertheless, customers can expect Lawson in February to continue selling boxed lunches and rice balls made with only the finest rice and other ingredients.
In prepared breads, despite the launch of hot sandwiches and other new products, Lawson was unable to arrest the overall downward trend in year-on-year sales in this category. Lawson will continue to develop products matched to customer needs that target the early spring period when demand for prepared breads tends to rise.
In the fast food category, sales were strong, exceeding the level recorded in January last year. This was due to new product launches of fried foods and Chinese dumplings, the success of the Karaage Kun campaign and cold weather in mid-January.
Bakery category sales continued to exceed previous year levels due in part to the benefits of tie-up campaigns, which started on January 13, for Lawson's Totte Oki Sengen series of original breads. The campaigns finish on February 16.
In February, in addition to launching top-quality products, Lawson will sell Marukaburi Sushi and original Valentine's Day products created by three renowned pastry chefs. Lawson has also started accepting orders for original cakes for Hina Matsuri (Dolls' Festival). Don't miss the chance to buy these products.
