To ensure preparedness for disasters in the event of an emergency and to fulfill our role as a community lifeline, the Lawson Group retains the capacity to implement prompt disaster countermeasures to continue or rapidly resume store operation after a disaster. We partner with local governments to deliver emergency relief supplies, including food and everyday necessities, to support neighbors affected by a disaster. Additionally, we raise disaster relief funds and engage in other related activities.
We have established a disaster response manual that describes our perspective on disaster response and basic actions for employees and organization in the event of a disaster. Putting human life first, this manual describes initial response rules and procedures for all employees and organizations for each disaster category.
The Lawson Gorup holds disaster prevention drills three times a year to ensure preparedness in the event of large-scale disasters. Based on the principle of putting human life first, disaster drills emphasize drills to confirm human safety. In addition to monitoring the safety confirmation system introduced to ensure preparedness for major earthquakes, we have implemented multiple measures to make it possible to quickly confirm safety, including disaster communication hotlines and email and telephone channels.
We have also adopted incident maps for use as a search tool to check for safe evacuation locations. We distribute maps showing the nearest evacuation locations to stores. This allows franchise owners and crews to perform rapid evacuations in the event of an emergency.
Disaster drills are not the only way we prioritize human life. We encourage a keen awareness of this top priority in all stores and employees by sharing pamphlets, videos, and other materials with messages from franchise owners who have experienced earthquakes.
In the event of a major disaster, we will promptly set up an emergency task force.
After confirming personnel safety, the emergency task force will take steps to continue or swiftly resume store operations. We have adopted systems to rapidly collect information for this purpose, including a disaster information map system for checking matters such as road and rail operational status on a map and a status checker to quickly check for store damage. To continue store operation in the event of a power failure, we are taking various steps, including distributing compact generators to branches and area offices nationwide and installing portable order terminals in stores for use in place of POS systems for product sales. In these ways, we are building a structure to enable continual store operation.
We have concluded agreements with local governments to provide supplies and to support people unable to return home in the event of a disaster, thereby building a framework to enable mutual cooperation with affected communities.
In addition, effective July 1, 2017, we were named by the Prime Minister a designated public corporation under Article 2, Paragraph 5 of the Basic Act on Disaster Management. To support disaster-affected areas in cooperation with central and local governments, we formulate disaster prevention plans and conduct disaster drills in normal times while storing supplies and materials and preparing for disasters in other ways. In these and other ways, we strive to fulfill our role as a designated public corporation.
Additionally, we carry out business continuity management (BCM) on an ongoing basis to ensure preparedness for certain cases—for example, in the event that our management resources cease to function or large numbers of employees are unable to work due to a large-scale disaster. Through proactive steps, including formulating business continuity plans, we became the first convenience store to earn resilience certification.
On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Lawson and KDDI Corporation opened the first Disaster Support Lawson store—the remodeled Lawson Futtsu Minato Store in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture. To provide support in the event of a disaster, a Disaster Support Lawson store supports the community by providing power, telecommunications, means of collecting information, equipment that provides drinking water (for events that lead to water supply interruptions), and emergency toilets.
A rotating stock system refers to a system for purchasing everyday foods in somewhat larger quantities and consuming them by order of best-by dates, while replacing those consumed with new stock to maintain a certain quantity of food on hand for each day.
Japan has been experiencing frequent earthquakes, torrential downpours, and other large-scale natural disasters in recent years.
Rotating stock systems are attracting attention as a way to keep supplies on hand to maintain close to normal nutrition levels even in the event of an emergency.
Since January 2025, Lawson has partnered with convenience stores who are members of the Japan Franchise Association (JFA) to promote awareness of rotating stock systems to ensure preparedness for large-scale disasters like a Nankai Trough earthquake or an earthquake centered under Tokyo.
Given the priority assigned to human life in the event of a major disaster, relief supplies from national or local governments may not arrive immediately. It is recommended to keep a rotating stock of at least three (and where possible seven) days' supply, multiplied by the number of people in the household.
Lawson sells foods appropriate for rotating stock systems, as well as everyday items that can be used even when lifeline services like electricity, gas, and water supplies are interrupted. We encourage people to stock up on long-lasting foods and beverages before a major disaster strikes.

To serve as community lifelines in the event of an emergency, we form partnerships with local governments to provide supplies and to support those affected by transport disruptions (by registering stores as support stations for people walking home in a disaster and providing tap water, toilets, and disaster information, to the extent possible, to stranded people in the event of a major disaster).

We pursue fundraising activities at Lawson, Natural Lawson, Lawson Store 100, HMV, Lawson United Cinema, and Seijo Ishii stores nationwide to ensure effective response to large-scale disasters. In addition to fundraising in Lawson stores, donations are accepted via the Loppi in-store multimedia terminals and loyalty points. (Participating stores and methods may vary by fundraising campaign.)
Donations are delivered to affected persons by disaster task forces in affected areas, the Japanese Red Cross Society, the Japan Association for the World Food Programme, the Central Community Chest of Japan, and other organizations.
