The sales result of Lawson, Inc. in January is as follows*1. Existing-store sales (excluding ticket and gift card sales etc.) decreased 7.1% year on year over the same period and the average number of customers per store fell 15.5% and the average customer spend rose 10.0% year on year. Total sales at all stores in January amounted to 196,971 million yen, a 6.7 % down year on year, and average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 460 thousand yen*2.

The Lawson Group operated 14,524 convenience stores in Japan at the end of January 2021, including 144 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 682 LAWSON STORE 100 stores. The existing LAWSON stores' sales in Japan (LAWSON and NATURAL LAWSON)*1 decreased 7.3% year on year.

In response to the increase in the number of people infected with the COVID-19, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency in Tokyo and three surrounding prefectures on January 7, 2021. This restricted social activities and affected customer visits. Despite these circumstances, sales of Fresh foods, frozen foods, daily delivered foods, and room-temperature Japanese and Western sweets increased significantly year-on-year due to the success of our expanded and improved product offering initiatives implemented since last autumn. Other strong categories are as follows:

Sales of cooked noodles rose year on year, reflecting strong sales of Range noodle "Ramen Yokocho" series supervised by popular specialty stores all over the country, following the previous month. Sales of toys were up sharply year on year, driven by sales of Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) related products, a popular animations. Cigarette sales were almost unchanged from the previous year.

Character stamp rally, smartphone lottery, etc. were implemented as initiatives to provide enjoyment to a wide range of customers.

On January 26, we began selling the "number-selection type lottery" (6 types including LOTO 6) using “Loppi” multimedia terminals installed at LAWSON stores nationwide. Sales at number-selection type lottery stores nationwide will be the first such effort at a convenience store.

At LAWSON stores nationwide that operate Machikado Chubo in-store kitchen (approximately 6400 stores: as of the end of January 2021), from January 26 to May, we will gradually change bowl-type boxed meals containers to environmentally friendly paper containers. This amendment to paper containers will result in an annual reduction of about 250 tons of plastics.

On January 28, we introduced Uber Eats food delivery service to 5 LAWSON stores in Kagoshima Prefecture. As a result, LAWSON handled Uber Eats at 1507 stores in 28 prefectures as of the end of January.
At the end of January, LAWSON had 1508 stores in 28 prefectures that had introduced food delivery services (Uber Eats and foodpanda). (*Some stores have introduced both "Uber Eats" and "foodpanda")

As of February 10, an emergency declaration continues in 10 prefectures. LAWSON will support the lives of its customers as a familiar community infrastructures that handle food and daily necessities, while thoroughly preventing infections among customers and employees.
