The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in May amounted to 174,284 million yen, a 0.9% up year on year. Existing-store sales fell 2.7% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 515 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) fell 2.8% to 827, and the average customer spend at existing stores rose 0.1% to 579 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 fell 2.9% in May.
The sharp fall in concert ticket sales accounted for approximately 2.0 point of year-on-year fall in existing-store sales in May, since the timing to record ticket sales of a certain big event has shifted from May to June. Furthermore, the fall in cigarette sales shaved around 0.5 point off its growth in May as well.
Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.
Sales of delicatessen items, daily delivered food and frozen food items, which include our Lawson Select series, rose considerably year on year, with discount sales and TV advertisement.
Good sales of NATURAL LAWSON brand’s cup beverages gave a boost to year-on-year sales of chilled beverage category.
Sales of soft drinks saw sales rise year on year in May, due to a promotion for Ponta members.
The Lawson Group operated 12,462 convenience stores in Japan at the end of May 2016, including 137 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 800 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
Regarding LAWSON STORE 100, existing-store sales fell 0.1% year on year in May (customer numbers: -2.4%; customer spend: +2.3%). In May, we opened no store and closed no store.
Lawson is promoting the “Rilakkuma Spring Campaign” until June 13, 2016 to help broaden its customer base.
Lawson plans to announce its earnings results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2016 on Monday, July 11. Summary of financial results and supplementary information will be posted on this website.
