The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in January amounted to 163,279 million yen, a 0.7% up year on year. Existing-store sales rose 0.5% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 499 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) rose 1.9% to 769, and the average customer spend at existing stores fell 1.4% to 594 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 rose 0.2% in January.
Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.
Sales from our delicatessen category, including salad items, rose strongly year on year in January thanks to effective marketing of some category items.
Over-the-counter fast food sales also expanded year on year in January due to continuing strong sales of MACHI Café and new fried chicken product.
Sales of daily delivered food items and frozen foods, which include our Lawson Select series, rose considerably year on year, with some strong TV advertising and timely discount sales boosting sales. We have been enhancing life-style support services and products, especially by the expansion of these categories.
Ice cream sales soared year on year on the back of the warm winter weather in the first half of January.
Our chilled beverage category saw sales rise year on year in January with the good sales of NATURAL LAWSON brand’s “Green Smoothie”.
Sales of soft drinks rose year on year in January thanks to a promotional campaign of instant lottery.
On the flip side, the sharp fall in cigarette sales shaved approximately 0.5 point off existing-store sales growth in January.
The Lawson Group operated 12,275 convenience stores in Japan at the end of January 2016, including 128 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 811 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
Regarding LAWSON STORE 100, existing-store sales rose 4.4% year on year in January (customer numbers: +3.9%; customer spend: +0.5%). In January, we opened no store and closed no store.
Lawson promote the “Miffy Soup Bowl Present Campaign” from December 1 to March 7, 2016 to help broaden its customer base.
Note 1: Lawson, Inc. sales include sales generated by LAWSON stores (excluding Lawson Okinawa, Inc., Lawson Minami-Kyusyu, Inc. and Lawson Kochi, Inc.), NATURAL LAWSON stores and LAWSON STORE100 stores. The LAWSON operation in Japan, equating to the non-consolidated performance disclosed up until January 2014, consists of sales generated by LAWSON, Inc. minus sales generated by LAWSON STORE100 stores.
