The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in March amounted to 176,810 million yen, a 1.1% up year on year. Existing-store sales fell 2.5% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 526 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) fell 1.1% to 804, and the average customer spend at existing stores fell 1.4% to 608 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 fell 2.3% in March.

Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.

 

Redesigned salad items (launched in February) and special product promotions in the evening and at night gave a considerable boost to year-on-year sales of Delicatessen category.

 

The special product promotions in the evening and at night also generated another rise in year-on-year sales of Daily Foods category in March.

 

Sales of over-the-counter fast foods gained over the previous year’s level. Newly launched “Yamitsuki Chicken” (item of nibbles for drinks) and strong sales of MACHI café with 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee beans also contributed to over-the-counter fast foods category.

 

The sharp fall in cigarette sales accounted for approximately 5 point of the year-on-year fall in existing-store sales in March.

 

The Lawson Group operated 12,164 stores in Japan at the end of March 2015, including 116 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,031 LAWSON STORE100 stores.

 

Regarding LAWSON STORE100, which we are working on the process of restructuring, existing-store sales fell 5.1% year on year in March (customer numbers: -3.7%; customer spend: =1.5%). In March, we didn’t open new store and closed 120 stores.

 

Lawson is promoting the ‘Rilakkuma Spring Campaign’ from March 3 to June 8 to help broaden its customer base.  

 

 

Note 1: Lawson, Inc. sales include sales generated by LAWSON stores (excluding Lawson Okinawa, Inc. and Lawson Minami-Kyusyu, Inc.), NATURAL LAWSON stores and LAWSON STORE100 stores. The LAWSON operation in Japan, equating to the non-consolidated performance disclosed up until January 2014, consists of sales generated by LAWSON, Inc. minus sales generated by LAWSON STORE100 stores.

 

Note 2: On March 31, after cash registers are closed to count daily sales at stores, sales for the remainder of the day, up to 24 pm, are booked on April 1, and are not included in sales of March.
