The sales result of Lawson, Inc. is as follows. Total sales at all stores in August amounted to 184,589 million yen, a 0.4% up year on year. Existing-store sales fell 1.5% over the same period. Average daily sales per store (all stores) totaled 555 thousand yen, while the average number of customers per store (existing stores) fell 5.7% to 864, and the average customer spend at existing stores rose 4.5% to 602 yen. The existing LAWSON stores’ sales in Japan*1 fell 1.0% in August.
Existing-store sales contracted year on year in August, due to the bad weather caused by seriously heavy rain mainly in the western Japan additionally on by falling cigarette sales. On the other hand, concert ticket sales in August helped boost overall existing-store sales by a healthy 3 points.
Below is a breakdown of the existing-store sales performance by individual merchandise categories.
Sales of noodle category, especially those of cold noodle fall sharply due to cold summer in the western Japan.
Bad weather had negative effect on sales in the beverage category and its sales fall sharply year on year. By contrast, sales in the ice-cream category rose sharply year on year, thanks to continued strong sales of our UCHI Café Frappe frozen drink series.
Sandwiches and other chilled bakery items generated another rise in year-on-year sales in August, as the segment continued to improve its already strong product range.
Special product promotions in the evening and at night gave a boost to year-on-year delicatessen sales.
The rice crackers and baked goods category recorded rising sales year on year, thanks to the continued strong popularity of original NATURAL LAWSON’s series of healthy sweets offering low sugar, calorie or salt content.
The sharp fall in cigarette sales accounted for approximately 1 point of the year-on-year fall in existing-store sales in August.
The Lawson Group operated 11,987 stores in Japan at the end of August 2014, including 109 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,177 LAWSON MART/LAWSON STORE100 stores.
Regarding LAWSON MART / LAWSON STORE100, existing-store sales fell 6.8% year on year in August (customer numbers: -8.7%; customer spend: +2.0%). In August, we opened 1 store and closed 5 stores.
Lawson is promoting the ‘Rilakkuma Autumn Campaign’ from September 2 to December 1 to help broaden its customer base.
