Total sales at all stores in March 2012 amounted to 160,896 million yen, an increase of 106.4% year on year. Consolidated net sales of existing stores increased by 101.8% yoy. Average daily sales per store (all stores) amounted to 529 thousand yen. The average number of customers per store (existing stores) was 869, a increase of 103.0% yoy, and average spending per customer (existing stores) decreased by 98.9% yoy, to 584 yen.
Gross profit margin of total sales excluding cigarette of existing stores increased year on year.
The number of Ponta card members reached approximately 40 million and members' sales shares of total sales kept increasing. Using customer purchasing data of those Ponta card members, Lawson developed new products and introduced fresh foods to stores in an attempt to expand the customer base by attracting more housewives and senior customers.
Sales in the rice and noodles, delicatessen, fast food, daily foods, and beverage categories exceeded 100% yoy. Despite a tough comparison to a year ago when sales were boosted by strong demand after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the over-the-counter fast food category, in particular, saw a yoy sales growth, thanks to continued successful efforts to sell prepared foods.
Sales of private brand "Lawson select," which includes prepared foods and daily necessities, continued to be robust, partly due to advertising campaign with a launch of a series of TV commercials.
In the fresh food category, enhanced fresh food-type LAWSON stores contributed to a substantial 130% yoy increase in sales.
Sales of cigarettes at existing stores dropped by about 2% yoy
As of March 31, 2012, the Lawson Group was comprised of 10,528 stores in Japan, including 100 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,166 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
Existing store sales of Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. amounted to 92.6% of the previous year
(number of customers: 95.0%; sales per customer: 97.5%). In March, Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. opened 14 stores and closed 20 stores, bringing the total number of stores to 1.166.
Lawson is slated for "the Spring Rilakkuma Fair" from February 28, 2012 to May 17, 2012.
